History
When the mushing made his entrance in Belgium this sport got a lot of agressive responce of animal right activists. To be correct a Royal Decree of 1936 prohibited the use of dogs to pull weights.
The consequence of negotations with the different responsable minstries for the welbeing of the animals, was that there was a licence obtained to keep 1 sleddograce every year. The first sleddograce had place in Malmédy in the years '80. They grouped a 30 sleddogteams coming from Belgium (the most part) but also from Germany, France, Luxembourg,....
The next year the sleddograce was being already cancelled due to administrative problems with the community and due to the weather and in stead a demonstration was being helt in the streets of Malmédy.
So we had to go look for a new place to achieve our goal. That place was the woods of Thomberg in Roth - St-Vith. The federation ofthat time had already organised a few sleddograces untill that Federation of that time was dissolved. Then The Snow Hook Team took the torch in hands and still till today we organize the International Sleddograce of Roth.
In 2002 in the weekend of 2 and 3 February the 16th edition of Thomberg (Roth - St Vith) had place and in 1998 after the dead of Mr Erich Backes, the sleddograce got his name : Trophée Erich Backes in honour to him because he always made his terrains available to us.
